.RDF File Extension

An RDF file is a document written in the Resource Description Framework language and is used for representing information about resources on the web. It contains information about a website in a structured format called metadata. RDF files may include a site map, an updates log, page descriptions, and keywords.

RDF files are also used by Mozilla Web browsers, such as Firefox, to store settings for windows and toolbar configurations.

Report file created by ArcGIS Desktop, an application suite for geospatial analysis and visualization; stores a generated report, which can include GIS statistics formatted as tabular data; generated from a report layout (.RLF) file.

Spreadsheet containing report output generated by a database or spreadsheet program such as Oracle or Microsoft Excel.

An RDF file is a template saved in the Research Documents Information Format (ReDIF). It contains metadata that describes one or more research publications, such as journals, papers, books, and software. RDF files store information about the publication, such as the author, email to contact the author, title of the publication, editor, date published, and workplace of the author of the publication.

RDF files are used by Research Papers in Economics (RePEc), a group dedicated to enhance the dissemination of research in Economics and other related sciences. RePEc uses RDF and .REDIF files to store metadata about publications, which allows the publications to be more easily organized and accessed. RDF files are used to contain metadata with ISO-LATIN-1 or Windows-1252 character encoding, whereas REDIF files are used to store metadata with UTF-8 character encoding.

RDF files are typically created with ReDIF software but since they are stored in plain text can be opened and edited by any text editor. Metadata stored in the RDF file is organized into separate lines of field_name: field value. An example of a field name and value is Author-Workplace-Name: University of Minnesota.
