File extension kraken is most often known to be ued for files that were encrypted and renamed by Rakhni ransomware distributed via any of the following Trojans:

  • Trojan-Ransom.Win32.Rakhni
  • Trojan-Ransom.Win32.Agent.iih
  • Trojan-Ransom.Win32.Aura
  • Trojan-Ransom.Win32.Autoit
  • Trojan-Ransom.AndroidOS.Pletor
  • Trojan-Ransom.Win32.Rotor
  • Trojan-Ransom.Win32.Lamer
  • and Trojan-Ransom.Win32.Cryptokluchen

Note: a different ransomware that uses kraken suffix appeared in December 2016, but this seems to be unrelated to the original Rakhni ransomware. It is know simply as Kraken Ransomware.


How to open:

You cannot open these files until you decrypt them successfully. There exist a decryptor from Kaspersky called RakhniDecryptor that may be of help.

How to convert:

You first need to decrypt the .kraken file before you can convert the content.

How to fix problems with .KRAKEN files

  1. You need to update the application that you normally use to open .KRAKEN files. Only the latest version of the software supports the current .KRAKEN file format
  2. You need to check the .KRAKEN file for viruses. To do this, you need to scan it with a popular antivirus (Norton, Nod32, Kaspersky, Dr.Web, etc.)
